| Social Security Administration's Definition of Disability The Social Security Administration's regulations define disbility as the inability to perform any substantial gainful activity (work) by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than twelve (12) months. Disability under Social Security's regulations is a total disability program. There is no award for any partial or short term (less than 12 months) disability. Too often individuals with legitimate disability claims are denied benefits. Having an experienced attorney assisting you with an appeal may result in a reversal of the unfavorable determination.
